Translation & Using Wikipedia as a Translation Engine

[edit]

relationship between the different wikis by language things that are easy to say english aren't easy to say in other languages straight translation may not work problems for translation in any medium samuel beckett translated his own plays and novels

process: reconceive the article in the new language example of difficult stuff: copelands harmony mirrors the american landscape (can't use mirror or landscape in the target language) need to go at it in a different way.

universial symbol system (greenmap) don't translate, interpret. interpret for the target audience.

is there a way to solicit a review for another language?

sources in the target language?

big difference between article in different languages, they have sources in their own languages that are totally different.

there may be a bias introduced by the sources in a different language

wikisource - repository for primary sources

the person who invents diff dumps for wikipedia projects will be a hero

people who could use this would be the ones who replicate wikipedia content

full wikipedia api

spanish wikipedia, many people involved, but don't see the mistakes. The people who know enough go directly to the english wikipedia.

warning: this article may have lower quality than english

featured ariticle in different languages have star.

writing artiles in other langauges makes it easier to contribute because there aren't as many articles

most underutilized volunteer force is the elderly, could potentially be new editors

interwiki links possibly visual "interpretation" of cleanup templates

are there bots crawling the wiki, tagging stubs and passing them off? no... but maybe there are some that convert generic 'stub' to 'chem-stub' or 'actor-stub'

what about scripts that go through and measure the # of links in an article, whether it's well organized / sectioned / referenced?
