Alta Technology is a global decarbonization company that designs, manufactures, and installs hybrid and fully electric battery engines for heavy duty Haul trucks and Locomotives. Headquartered in Australia, the company has operational branches in Africa and Asia.[1]
History
[edit]Alta was founded in 2022 as part of a broader group established in 1992, with headquarters located in Nanjing. The group is recognized as a state-level specialised, innovative, and high-tech enterprise and is a strategic partner of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since its inception, it has pursued a technology-driven development strategy, emphasizing core technology autonomy and continuous innovation within the urban rail transit market, evolving into a leading supplier of traction and control systems in China’s rail transit sector.[2]
In recent years, leveraging its expertise in high-power electronics technology, the group has strategically expanded into the electric drive industry. Its portfolio now includes electrification applications for national railways, traction electric drive systems for rail transit, power assemblies for construction machinery, marine power systems, auxiliary power supplies[3], renewable power solutions, and life cycle maintenance services.[4]
Technological Innovations & Projects
[edit]With a 30-year history in electronic control systems for high-voltage equipment and locomotives, Alta is leveraging its expertise in power supply and controls to drive large-scale decarbonisation projects in heavy machinery.[5] The company is focused on developing technologies that enable the integration of renewable energy sources into industrial applications.
Battery Electric Tender
[edit]In 2024, Alta announced a partnership with Aurizon to deliver a prototype of the world's first battery electric tender.[6] The project involves installing a 1.8 megawatt-hour (MWh) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and battery management system into a 45-foot container wagon positioned behind the locomotive. The project, based in Fortitude Valley, has received funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) through its Advancing Renewables Program. The project is expected to be completed by late 2026.[7]
