Homework for Monday/Tuesday

[edit]

1. Check out the help pages.

[edit]

Check out the wikipedia Help pages, especially the Getting Started section.

Some very important help pages that you must eventually look at (at least in part) for this assignment are:

  • Citing Sources(talks about the importance of sources and how to cite sources)

2. Start your wikipedia article draft on your wikipedia user page.

[edit]

If you haven't already started your article draft, please create it under your Wikipedia user page.

  1. Click your user name in the menu bar to go to your "User" page.
  2. Create a link to a new page that will be your article draft.
Important: Prefix the page name with the path to your user page, as follows:
[[User:Yourusername/MyFirstDraft]]
If you create the page in the wikipedia encyclopedia space, it will be flagged for speedy deletion.

3. Start composing your wikipedia article on your user page.

  • Add your references right away. They are essential to a good article.
  • Look at the wikipedia style guidelines concerning wording, the lead section, titles, headings, words to avoid, etc., and revise your article to conform to good wikipedia style.

3. Practice Inserting References

[edit]

Practice inserting one reference into your wikipedia article.

See the Citing Sources Guide

[edit]

If you can find a good image for your article, you can (optional) practice uploading the image to see what the copyright statements are like.

Find and upload an image that is in the public domain or has creative commons license.

But at least read about how to upload images.

Things to Read or Try:

  • Uploading Images
  • Wikimedia Commons
  • Do a google search for images including the terms "public domain" or "creative commons"
  • On google you can also just search for "public domain images" and you will find a list of sites that provide images that are free to use.
  • On flickr.com you can search for images with "public domain" or "creative commons" licenses
