One Foot in The Black new article content ... One Foot in The Black is the first book published by author Kurt Kamm[2] . It's hero - Greg Kowalski - grows up in Michigan with an abusive father, a Saginaw city firefighter. After being cut off from his family, Kowalski travels to Southern California where he trains to become a firefighter. Tormented by the contradiction of needing his father's love and approval and hating his father at the same time, he seeks redemption in his own mind.

Kowalski joins the LACoFD helitack training academy at Camp 8 where he soon graduates and starts his new career. He suffers traumatic stress after his crew is trapped on a mountainside in an explosive wildfire and his captain and mentor dies in a burnover. The night before this incident, Kowalski’s father is killed in a fire in Saginaw. Kowalski struggles to cope with these dual tragedies.

He comes to terms with the loss of his captain, but has greater difficulty surmounting his father’s influence on his life. One Foot in The Black is a metaphor for Kowalski's life, a nineteen-year-old searching for his place in life.

Other books by Kamm include Red Flag Warning and Code Blood
