Culture

[edit]

When it comes to transmasculine culture and transmasculinity in the arts and media, transmasculinity is certainly still on the fringes due partly to transmasculine people being underrepresented in the media.

Chaz Bono is one prominent figure that has publicly transitioned from female to male. Bono faced serious scrutiny once he came out with his transition, something that most trans people have to deal with throughout their lives, this scrutiny makes it difficult for trans people to be open about their gender identity which in part contributes to the little representation that transmasculinity has.

Transmasculinity has yet to be regularly portrayed in the media. There are LGBTQ support groups working to bring accurate depictions of trans people and their lives to the the public, such as the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival (SFTFF). Events such as SFTFF and others like it, are important to bringing transmasculine culture to light.
