Wkipedia edit proposal

The wikipedia article on speed skating definitely needs to be revised. This is due to most of the information being outdated or incomplete. My first step in this revision process will be to update the rules section. This section has almost nothing in it and much of the information is incorrect. US speedskating has the complete speedskating rules for the 2015/2016 season. I am not planning to go into specifics, but it should at least be able to be viewed by someone who has no previous knowledge of the sport and can come away with a general understanding of what is going on.

Another thing that has been bugging me is that there is no information on the skates themselves. As this is a very unique and defining part of the sport, this need to be changed. However, I can see why there is nothing on the subject, simply because it is very hard to find a reliable written source that talks about the skates. I personally could tell you almost every single detail about the skates but I need a source to back it up. This is one thing in skating that books do not describe. I need to find a good source and use that to backup my knowledge of that subject.

Once the previous two thing have been completed, I would like to get rid of the massive amount of roller derby information in the article. At the top of the article it states that this particular article is about ice speed skating and if the searcher is looking for roller derby they should follow the provided link. yet throughout the ice speed skating article, there is a lot of roller derby information. I have nothing against people who roller derby, but the sports are quite different from one another. this was how I could tell that the people who edit this article have never speed skated or tried roller derby . Almost everyone I talk to thinks they are the same thing due to the similar style of races. this is not necessarily bad but the two should be differentiated to clear up any confusion. Maybe editing this article will clear up a lot of confusion about the sport in general. It would be cool to make a difference and show a little bit more what the sport is really like.

While a bit overly simplistic, this source talks about speed skates themselves in an informative and easy to understand fashion. The information is correct and is complete enough for me to use for the article. I wish I could find something a bit more academic in nature but so far nothing has come up.

This source give a simple overview of the sport. It is excellent if the reader has no previous knowledge of the sport. I need this because most speed skating websites and books assume that the reader knows the basics. it will get rid of a lot of the missing information that no seems to be able to find.
