Jay Rutherford teaches graphic design and typography at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. He was born in 1950 in Sarnia Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Oshawa Ontario. Jay studied graphic design at St. Lawrence College of Applied Arts and Technology in Kingston, Ontario from 1969 to 1972. He then worked in various capacities in the graphic arts industry in Kingston, Ottawa and Halifax. In 1985 he returned to design school and achieved a Bachelor of Design at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (now NSCAD University) in 1987. In 1992 Jay Rutherford worked at MetaDesign in Berlin, then in 1993 was hired as fully-tenured Professor of Visual Communications at what is now the Bauhaus University Weimar. He took a leave of absence from 2003 until 2005 to help build the Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano in northern Italy. Jay Rutherford travels extensively, attending conferences and speaking on topics related to typography, graphic design and design teaching.
