Joe Armstrong (born 1962) is an Irish author[1], Humanist[2], journalist, podcast host[3] and teacher. He began his career studying for the Roman Catholic priesthood[4] at the Marist Fathers[5] in Milltown, Dublin, in 1980, but left close to ordination[6] in 1989. He then became a teacher of English and religion education at St Bonaventure's Comprehensive school[7] in the East End[8] of London, where he taught from 1990 to 1994.

Armstrong is the author of several books, including "Men's Health, the Common Sense Approach"[9], "Write Way to Stop Smoking"[10][11], and his first memoir "In My Gut I Don't Believe"[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19], which is a personal account of his experiences and struggles with faith, sexuality, and identity. He also co-authored a history of Muckamore Abbey Hospital[20] and was commissioned by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions[21] to write the booklet "Workplace Stress in Ireland"[22].

In addition to his writing, Armstrong has worked as a humanist celebrant[23][24][25], where he has gained a reputation for setting a relaxed tone and using humor in conducting weddings, baby namings, and funerals. Videos[26] and photos of him conducting ceremonies are available on YouTube[27]. He also hosts a podcast called "Losing My Religion"[28] and writes a Substack newsletter called "Joe's Substack"[29][30].

Armstrong has been a weekly columnist with the Irish Times[31] for seven years and a columnist with Reality[32], Face Up[33][34], and the Irish Freethinker[35]. His RTE radio documentary "From Belief to Unbelief"[36][37] was shortlisted for the New York Festivals' World's Best Radio Awards[38].
