Owu Waterfalls is a waterfall located between Owa Onire and Owa Kajola in Ilere District of the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria.[1] It is the tallest waterfall in West Africa measuring 120m above sea level and cascades 330 feet (100.58m) down an escarpment, with rocky outcrops into a pool of ice-cold water, amidst beautiful greenery) below.[2][3]

Owu Waterfalls is located in Owa-Onire Community in Kwara State, Nigeria.[4] Though located in the southernmost part of Ifelodun, it is easily accessible from Isin Local Government Area.[5]

Geography

The coordinates for Owu waterfall is 08:3N, 5.8E. Owu Waterfalls is located on an altitude of about 590m above sea level at the extreme northeastern part of the Kukuruku Hills; an area of dissected highlands which extend from the neighboring Ekiti State from the south to Kogi State in the east. Owu Waterfall is one of the most spectacular natural waterfalls in Nigeria.[5]

Mythology/ History The person who discovered the waterfall in about 1819 was Bamigboye Aremu who met a big python there; the python told Aremu that "he" (the python) will leave the place but will the sign of a rainbow there. The waterfall was initially called Asawu Waterfall, but the name was later changed to Owu Waterfall. The Owu waterfall was brought to modern limelight over 40 years by a missionary of the Sudan Interior Mission (now Evangelical Church Winning All - ECWA) named Reverend Plefare Dui. It is also believed that the water gushes down harder when ever people shout "OWU FALL" from below.

Tourism There have been many visitors to the site but the attraction for visitors is being diminished by the rough road access to the site.
