Trio Translation

1. Trio ist das erste Studioalbum der gleichnamigen norddeutschen Band Trio. Es erschien am 27. Oktober 1981 mit einer Bonus-Single und einem Tragegriff am Cover beim Label Mercury Records. Produziert wurde das Album von Klaus Voormann. Der kommerzielle Erfolg des Albums setzte erst Mitte 1982 mit Veröffentlichung seiner dritten Auflage ein, die das zuvor nur auf einer gesonderten Single erhältliche Lied Da Da Da enthielt. Dieses Lied hatte sich seit April 1982 im Zuge der Neuen Deutschen Welle zu einem nationalen und später auch internationalen Erfolg entwickelt. In Deutschland erreichte das Album Platz drei der Albumcharts. Das Album Trio enthält insgesamt 14 Lieder, deren Instrumentierung sich meist in der Verwendung von Schlagzeug, E-Gitarre und Gesang erschöpft. Ein Großteil der Lieder beschreibt gescheiterte Liebesbeziehungen, vereinzelt wird auch Medienkritik geübt.

1. 'Trio' is the first self-titled studio album of the north German Band 'Trio'. The album was released on 27th October 1981 and included a Bonus Single aswell as the address of the label company 'mercury records' on the coverdesign. The album was produced by 'Klaus Voorman'. The commercial success of the album was first seen in the middle of 1982 with the release of the third version including the song 'Da Da Da ich liebe dich nicht du liebst mich nicht aha aha aha Da Da Da' which previously was only available on a separate single. Since 1982 the song developed national, and later, international success thanks to the 'New German Wave'. The album climbed to third place in the charts in Germany. The album 'Trio' contains 14 songs in total, whose instrumentation is exhausted by the use of 'drums', 'electric guitars' and 'vocals'. Most of the songs describe a 'failed love interest' and some songs occasionally deal with critics from the media.

25. Der Rocksong Sunday You Need Love Monday Be Alone beschreibt eine Frau, die begehrt wird, wobei von vornherein klar ist, dass die Beziehung das Wochenende nicht überdauern wird. Gegen Ende des Liedes fordert der Vortragende die Frau gar auf, sich nicht mit ihm einzulassen, da er sie nicht respektvoll genug behandeln würde.

Das Lied Nur ein Traum beschreibt zweimal einen Tagtraum – einmal auf Englisch, einmal auf Deutsch. Das Lyrische Ich ist mit seiner Geliebten im Auto unterwegs und schwärmt von ihr. Dann wird ihm klar, dass er eigentlich allein im Auto sitzt, und die Geliebte nur ein Traum ist.

Wie schon Ja ja ja ist das Lied Ja Ja Wo gehts lank Peter Pank schönen Dank dem Hardrock zuzuordnen. Zu einem sehr schnell gespielten Gitarrenriff und einer Schlagzeugfigur, die nur auf Bassdrum und Snare gespielt wird, singt Remmler auf Deutsch eine Reihe zusammenhangloser Phrasen, darunter auch Trios Telefonnummer. Das Lied endet, indem es ohne Fadeout abgebrochen wird.

Die einzige Coverversion des Albums ist Ya Ya, ein Rhythm-and-Blues-Hit von Lee Dorsey aus dem Jahr 1961. Der kurze Text wird von Remmler – im Gegensatz zum Vortrag des Originalinterpreten – betont monoton dargeboten. Das Solo nach der zweiten Strophe besteht aus vier chromatisch gespielten Tönen einer Heimorgel.

25. The Rocksong Sunday You Need Love Monday Be Alone is about a relationship with a desired woman and it is clear from the start that this relationship will not last any longer than the weekend. Towards the end of the song, the speaker even asks the woman to not let him in because he would not treat her with enough respect.

The song Nur ein Traum describes a day-dream (Tagtraum) twice - once in English and once in German. The 'narrator' is travelling with his loved one in the car and is all over her. Then it becomes clear to him that he is actually sitting alone in the car and his loved one is only a dream.

Like the song Ja Ja Ja, Ja Ja Wo gehts lank Peter Pank schönen Dank is an example of Hardrock. To a very fast guitar riff and a drum lick consisting of only the bass drum and snare, Remmler sings a series of unrelated phrases in German including Trio's telephone number. The songs ends abruptly without fading out.

The only 'cover version' on the album is Ya Ya, a Rhythm-and-Blues hit by Lee Dorsey in 1961. The short text was sung by Remmler - unlike the original - in a particularly monotonous manner. The solo after the second verse consists of four chromatic notes played on an electronic home organ.

26. Danger Is beginnt mit einem dissonanten Gitarrenriff, das abrupt mit dem Einsetzen des Gesangs endet. Inhaltlich beschreibt das Lied das Herannahen einer nicht greifbaren Gefahr. Nach jeder Strophenzeile spielt Krawinkel ein kurzes Riff auf der E-Gitarre. Nach zwei Strophen setzt das Riff aus dem Intro erneut ein, es wird jedoch noch dissonanter gespielt. Dazu heult eine Sirene.

Das Album wird mit einem kurzen Ausschnitt aus einem Konzert von Trio beendet, der aus einer textlich veränderte Kurzfassung des jamaikanischen Volksliedes Banana Boat Song besteht, welches vor allem in einer Fassung von Harry Belafonte populär wurde. Anstatt des abschließenden Schlachtruf „Day-O“ des Originals ruft Behrens auf der Aufnahme: „Tri-o“, worauf das Publikum „Tri-i-i-o“ antwortet.

26. Danger Is begins with a dissonant guitar riff that ends abruptly with the introduction of the vocals. In terms of content, the song is about a looming unknown danger. After each verse line, Krawinkel plays a short riff on the electric guitar. After two verses the riff from the intro reappears with even more dissonance, in addition to a blaring siren.

The album ends with a short extract from one of Trio's concerts, that includes a text-edited short version of the Jamaican folk song Banana Boat Song which was a hit for Harry Belafonte. Instead of the final chant "Day-O" of the original, Behrens shouts: "Tri-o" to which the audience responds "Tri-i-i-o".

16. Die 1984 erschienene CD-Fassung des Albums behielt das schlichte Cover weitgehend bei. Lediglich das handschriftliche Tracklisting wurde gegen eine Version in Druckbuchstaben ausgetauscht. Auf der CD finden sich im Gegensatz zur Vinyl-Ausgabe weder eine Nennung der Autoren noch des Produzenten. Insgesamt umfasst daher der Informationsgehalt der CD-Fassung nur: Bandname, Privatadresse, Telefonnummer, Titelliste und Texte.

Die Nennung der Telefonnummer von Trio führte zwangsläufig zu einer großen und wohl auch intendierten Anzahl von Anrufen im Haus von Trio in Großenkneten. Wegen der zunehmenden Popularität der Band schaffte sich Trio einen Anrufbeantworter an, den mal Remmler, mal Krawinkel, mal Behrens besprach. Auch die Nennung der Privatadresse führte zu zahllosen Besuchen von Fans, die ein konzentriertes Musizieren nahezu unmöglich machten. 1984 zogen Remmler und Behrens aus; Krawinkel verließ 1989 als letztes Bandmitglied das Haus in Großenkneten.

16. The CD version, which was released in 1984, largely maintained the plain cover. Only the track list, originally handwritten, was replaced by printed letters. In contrast to the vinyl edition, names of authors and producers were left out completely on the CD. The information on the CD version contained: band name, private home address, phone number, list of tracks and lyrics.

Including their private phone number inevitably led to a large number of calls to their house in Großenkneten, which they most likely intended. Thus, they installed an answering machine and regularly each band member recorded a new voice mail. Also, using their private home address led to countless visitors that made it almost impossible for them to focus on making music. In 1984, Remmler and Behrens moved out of their house in Großenkneten and finally in 1989 the last band member, Krawinkel, left.

28. Erst Jahre nach Veröffentlichung erhielt das Album wohlwollende Kritiken und Auszeichnungen. 2001 wurde das Album von den Redakteuren des Musikexpress zum drittwichtigsten Album aus Deutschland überhaupt gewählt. Autor Christoph Lindemann resümiert in seinem Artikel über das Album: „Trio erinnerten kurz an Punk, an Schlager und an jedermanns erste Gesangsübungen im Jugendzimmer und konfrontierten ihr Pling-Pling und Bäng-Bäng mit aufreizend redundanten Textpassagen. So war Pop in Deutschland bis dato nicht auf den Punkt gekommen.“

28. It was not until years after the release that the album received awards and positive reviews. In 2001, the German magazine Musikexpress listed the album as one of the three major albums by German bands of all time. In his album review, the author, Christoph Lindemann, stated: "Trio reminded me of punk, of Schlager music but at the same time, it sounded like everone's first attempt at singing when they were young. The Pling-Pling and Bang-Bang of their music was frequently accompanied by totally meaningless texts. Until then no band had ever produced pop music quite like they did." c.f.
