Chemistry under extreme conditions

Levine has worked and studied chemistry experiments conducted under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. Although at first his work suggested applications to problems found in space physics, Levine and his collaborators have shown that these conditions may occur when energetic clusters of atoms strike hard surfaces. The high energy density that accompanies collisions can enable reactions to take place that are favored by thermodynamics but ordinarily occur at negligible rates. Levine’s theoretical calculations have led to a number of experimental studies that already confirm some of his predictions.[1]

Quantum Dots

Many of Levine’s experiments and interests in research are tied to his work on the properties of quantum dots, or “designer atoms”, and their interactions. He has explored in depth the electronic structures of these nano materials and the various ways that they respond to external controls such as pressure and electric field. His research helps give insight into experiments and the ways in which quantum dots are applied in electronic devices.[2]

Chemistry on multi electronic states

Levine’s experiments also take into account inherently quantum mechanical features such as when processes occur simultaneously on several electronic states.[3]

Algebraic techniques and information theory

Levine makes use of methodologies based on information theory and algebraic quantum mechanics because they are useful in seeking a more compact description and examining more abstract issues than molecular dynamic simulations and quantum mechanical methods.[4]
