Passwords are common in fiction, from the simple to the complex, and the deciphering or retrieval of these passwords often plays a large part of the plot. One password in particular, swordfish, has been used in numerous works, beginning with the Marx Brothers movie Horse Feathers.

• Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: Caput Draconis (one of several passwords spoken to the Fat Lady portrait to access the Gryffindor dormitories)
• Night Watch: Swordfish. (As Sam Vimes says "The password was ALWAYS Swordfish")
• The Lord of the Rings: Mellon (the Sindarin word for friend is the password to the western gate of Moria)
• The Book of One Thousand and One Nights: Open, Sesame (used by Ali Baba in "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves")

• Babylon 5: Peek-a-boo (system password used by Chief Warrant Officer Michael Garibaldi), Zoe's dead (system password used by Captain Elizabeth Lochley), Wine, women, song (passwords used by Londo for his "purple files")
• Doctor Who: There is nothing more useless than a lock with a voice print. (password set by Cardinal Barusa to open a secret door. The password was guessed and used by The Doctor to evade security escorts after he was elected president of the high council of the Time Lords.)

Computer games

• Baldur's Gate: To gain entrance to the thieves' guild in the city of Baldur's Gate, the player has to say the password Fafhrd to the sentry at the door, a reference to Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.
• Larry 1: Ken sent me, to gain entrance to the door to the right in the bar. Password is written on the wall in WC.
• Theatre Europe: Launch code for nuclear strike is MIDNIGHT SUN.
