Kaye Hall

  • Kaye Hall was built in 1915 out of sandstone that was native to the Marquette region (distinctively reddish-creame colored) and was a multipurpose building. It functioned as an auditorium, library, gymnasium, administrative office and housed several classrooms. It was built in a gothic architectural styling and was the heart of the young institution making it the focal point for student life. It was named in the 1940's after James Kaye the school's first president and second principal. However due to inner administrative politics the building was planned for destruction. Many opposed the planned destruction and in 1971 a Save Kaye Hall Committee was formed. Due to the lack of committee agreement the building was destroyed.[1] Many local historian's say that this is one of the biggest mistakes in Northern Michigan Universities history.
