The Wars of the Lilies, at the time known as the Capet Troubles, were a series of dynastic conflicts over the succession to the throne of West Francia after the extinguishing of the main line of the Capet dynasty. The two most powerful branches of the Capet dynasty, the Valois and the Anjou, fought for control of the throne over the span of two decades, resulting in the death of the male line claimants of both branches and the subsequent involvement of lower aristocracy to attempt a grab at the throne, the most notable house being the Italian dukes of Savoy, the Savoie dynasty, which came out on top of the conflict as the Kings of Frankia. Following the usurpation of the throne by the Savoie dynasty was a series of conflicts and rebellions to reestablish various French dynasties to the Throne.

The founding of a Savoien Frankia brought many changes to the structure, culture and most notably, religion of the Frankish realm. Duchies were reorganized into Viceroyalties, an early attempt at establishing a Proto-Absolutism control of land and weeding out the, as the Italians thought, inefficient structure of Feudalism. Other, less powerful counties, were reestablished in accordance to the 《Italian system of republicanism》.
