Funmilayo Adedire

Funmilayo Mokunfayo Adedire is a Nigerian Professor of Architecture and a licensed architect. She works presently in Bowen University, Nigeria, where she serves as the Provost of College of Environmental Sciences.[1]

Early life and background

Funmilayo is from the town of Iyin,Ekiti, a peaceful town in Southwestern part of Nigeria. She holds a BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Architecture from the University of Lagos. She received an additional degree (MSc)in Urban & Regional Planning from the University of Ibadan and is currently enrolled in University of Pretoria for her second PhD in Town and Regional Planning. She also holds an MBA degree from the Redeemers University, Ede. She is a licensed architect and a member of Nigerian Institute of Architects.

She began her teaching career as a graduate assistant in department of Architecture of University of Lagos in 2009. She left academia to focus on full architectural practice in 2010 and has engaged in various consultancy and contracting projects spanning over two decades. She had designed and constructed different housing schemes and multi-use buildings for individuals and corporate organisations.  She continues to participate in advisory services, design and implementation of viable projects all over Nigeria. Sequel to the completion of her PhD in Architecture, she returned to the academia in Lead City University, Ibadan in 2018, she recorded outstanding feats which included full accreditations across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She also pioneered all postgraduate degrees in Architecture in the same university with full professional and NUC accreditations to her credit. She is presently the Provost of College of Environmental Sciences in Bowen University (Of the Nigeria Baptist Convention), Iwo, Osun State. She is an entrepreneur with many business initiatives (Project management, Interior design firms, Restaurants and Laundromats). Demonstrable results in the Academia include among many initiating, developing University academic curriculums, spearheading and securing both professional and NUC accreditations for Architecture programmes from undergraduate to postgraduate level including research programmes.

Professor Funmilayo Adedire’s research interests centre on these principal areas of architectural research, Resilient & sustainable Housing; Architectural Technology (digital innovation in architectural practice and education), Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Her research publications have covered different aspects of urban transitions, including peri-urban housing, challenges to spatial transition, urban quality and resilience of emerging African peripheral urban systems. Other areas of publications include the adoption of digital technology both in architectural education and practice.  Her postdoctoral research works are currently on “The Comparative Evaluation of Urban Systems’ Resilience in Lagos Megacity Periphery Communities and Sustainability of Communities in Lagos-Ogun Periphery”. Further research experience includes reviewing for reputable journals.  

She has a career goal of engaging in leading research and dissemination of knowledge that would result in improved access to quality and sustainable housing development with balanced infrastructure by the majority of urban residents in peri-urban of Nigeria and other developing countries.

Personal Life

Born on the 29th of September 1976, in town of Iyin Ekiti to a farmer, bricklayer father and a trade merchant. She grew up in a very challenging environment with limited resources. She was an excellent student both in college and universities attended. She is married with two male children. She writes poems, songs and is passionate about making positive lasting impact on youths.
