The name Ion comes primarly from a play on the words Sea lion, where if you split it in half and change the order you end up with "Ion Seal".
Secondarily, Ion is appropriate, because "Ion's are small and insignificant, yet vitally important. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative. Often 'one electron short of an atom', though."
Thirdly, it's short, snappy, and easy to remember.
It is also a distorted version of "John".
One disadvantage is that it may be difficult to translate well to Chinese, ending up with a three-syllable thing like "Ai-Ou-Ne" or something, so for the benefit of our beloved 20% of the population, Ion is known to them as Qi Haibao (奇海豹), meaning Weird/Wonderful Sea Leopard (i.e. Seal).
