Introduction
[edit]The Hidden Messages In Water is a New York Times Bestseller book, written by Masaru Emoto[1]. The book was published in the year 2005 and focuses on a pseudoscience hypotheses that the molecular structure of water changes by the presence of human consciousness nearby[2]. The book has therefore been translated into twenty four languages[3].
Background
[edit]Masaru Emoto was a Japanese author who broached the theory of a change in the molecular structure of water as a result of human’s subconscious or conscious thoughts. Emoto made use of articulate experiments and diagrams to back his theory. Many researchers like biologist Tyler Volk, physician Harriet A. Hall[2], and biochemist William Reville have often claimed that Emoto’s findings fall under the Pseudoscience dynamic, a branch of science which has not found much validation from the prudent minds[4]. Masaru Emoto has also been regarded as the ‘Doctor of alternative medicine’ by some sources[4].
Content
[edit]Emoto has used high speed photography and carefully propounded diagrammatic representation to elucidate the crystal formation in frozen water contingent on the nature of thoughts, the water was exposed to[5]. The experiments presented in the book talks about formation of clear and snowflake shaped crystals in water which was claimed to be exposed to positive and lovable thoughts[6]. On the contrary, Emoto claims that crystal formation in water which was exposed to negative and abominable thoughts exhibited an asymmetric and unruly pattern. The book tries to suggest the idea that water might be highly reflective of its surroundings and could be used to impart health and positivity around[7].
Reception
[edit]The book received a rather mixed attention. Some people hailed the findings demonstrated in the book and spoke greatly about its relevance. “The Hidden Messages in Water is magnificent. Through his genius photography and superb scientific skill, Dr. Masaru Emoto has created a book that is truly a mystical treasure.” Said Caroline M. Myss, author of Sacred Contracts and Anatomy of the Spirit. Whereas, Stephen Kiesling in Spirituality & Health Magazine wrote "What he is saying has nothing to do with science as I know it." And "Perhaps Emoto is an evangelist who values the message of his images more than the particulars of science; nevertheless, this spiritual teacher might focus his future practice less on gratitude and more on honesty"[8]. Noelle C. Nelson, PhD and co-author of The Power of Appreciation said that “Dr. Emoto's work with water beautifully illustrates the healing power of love and gratitude.” On being New York Times Bestseller, literary critic Dwight Garner wrote in The New York Times Book Review that “it was one of those “head-scratchers" that made him question the sanity of the reading public.”[9]
Critical reception and skepticism
[edit]Emoto’s work has managed to attract a lot of skepticism and critique. His work has shown considerable imprints of Pseudoscience and hence the credibility of his claims are constantly under question by the scientific community. According to a report published in “it is very unlikely that there is any reality behind Emoto’s claims. A triple blind study of these claims failed to show any effect. Also, the phenomenon he describes has never been published in a peer reviewed science journal, which almost certainly means that the effect cannot be demonstrated under controlled conditions.”[10] Skeptics also believe that The Hidden Messages in Water appeals to that class of people who get fascinated by “new age science” like out of body experience and Chakra healing. There apparently is a huge fan base for these theories said William revile who is a professor of biochemistry at UCC.[10]
