South Club (Hangul: 사우스클럽) is a South Korean band formed in 2017 by singer Nam Tae-hyun[1]. The band's current line-up consists of four members: leader, vocalist, guitarist, composer and producer Nam Tae-hyun, bassist Nam Dong-hyun, drummer Jang Won-young and guitarist Kang Kun-ku. South Club debuted with the release of their first single Hug Me on May 26, 2017 which was also included in their first EP “90”.[2]

Formation

After Nam Taehyun's departure from his previous label on November 25th, 2016[3], he decided to continue to pursue music by forming a band. Nam posted a recruitment announcement online[4], but eventually met his future bandmate Kim Eui-myeong at a church. Kim Eui-myeong then latter introduced Nam Tae-hyun to his musician friends Kang Kunku, Jang Won-young & Choi Yun-hee and together they formed an originally 5 member band[5]. Besides Nam who already had some experienced in the entertainment industry before, his fellow member Kang Kunku and Kim Eui-myeong was a former member of a band[6]. Including Jang Won-young often help his fellow musicians up until now[7].

Their first-ever performance was announced by Nam on his social media at the end of March 25th. Along with the name of the band, "South Club"[8]. The formation of the band was then made official and Nam Tae-hyun established a music company called "South Buyers Club" under his name[9], in order to pursue the musical style that he likes. Nam then become the leader and main composer, while all the members help with the arrangement adding their own style to the songs.

2017: The beginning , 90 (EP)

South Club debuted on 26 May 2017 with their first single "Hug Me"[2], a melancholy song that expresses people’s loneliness. Their first single received a good response from fans and other fellow artists and from there the band started to perform at many events and festivals.

On June 18, South Club had their first official public stage at the music festival "Smile, Love, Weekend", where they gave an album preview and played the songs they prepared for their first EP. Their first seven-track EP 90 was released on June 27[10]. South Club described their music style as alternative rock with blues as foundation. Along with the album release, they also release 3 MVs. Dirty House (더러운 집) along with the MV of their title track called I Got The Blues and LIAR. On that album they released songs with different genre that are unlike other band before. Where they talk about freedom and youth throughout their songs. Which from their music styles can be seen they got influence by famous musician in the genre such as The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, and B.B King.[11]

On July 08, the band released their second single "NO" and the music video was uploaded on South Club’s official Youtube account.[12]

Later that year Choi Yun-hee wasn't seen perform together with South Club. Which then on 16th September 2017, Nam Tae-hyun announced that they'll continue as a 4 member band from then on and that the keyboardist Choi Yun-hee left the band due to personal reasons.

They then proceeded to have more live performances, guerilla concerts around South Korea. Then started to reach out to their fans from overseas and prepared Music Fan Meetings in Tokyo, Bangkok[13] & Taipei[14]. Where they have received a warm respons. On November 18 & 19, South Club hold their first official solo concert curated by Kim Tae Won at the Hyundai Card Understage, in Seoul with the appearances of 10cm, Heize and Nam Dong-hyun as their guests.[15]

Their third single  "누굴 위한 노래인가요 (Who Is This Song For?)" was released through digital music sites on December 5th[16]. The song itself was based out of Nam Tae-hyun's personal love story. where he admitted that at first it was supposed to be a warm love song. But then after his lover left him, he then rewrote the song that captures his feelings of getting lost.[17]

2018 - Present: South Club's Europe tour, Japan tour and other plans.

Early that year, Nam has announced it on his radio show that South Club will be touring across Europe. Which the good news then delivered by South Buyers Club that they will be visiting to London, Paris, Cologne and Madrid in April.[18]

On January 27th, the band hosted their first Music Fan Meeting of the year in Hong Kong.[19] Which was said that Nam has also shooted music video for their upcoming new album in Hong Kong.

A few weeks later, South Buyers Club announced that their bassist Kim Eui-myeong left the band due to personal reasons[20]. Which at the same time they uploaded a video saying that they have a new bassist taking the place. Then on the next day, February 18, South Club performed at the Rolling Hall 23rd Anniversary Concert along with their new bassist Nam Dong-hyun.

On 28 March 2018, South Buyers Club revealed that South Club will be touring in several places in Japan.[21]
