[edit]A condition that can develop in patients with latente varicella zoster virus. Its reactivation affects the geniculate ganglion which belongs to the seventh cranial nerve, also known as facial nerve. Due to its anatomical closeness to the eight cranial nerve, the virus can spread to this nerve and cause hearing loss, tinnitus (hearing noises that are not causes by outside sounds), and vertigo.
The triad of ipsilateral facial paralysis, ostalgia and vesicles in the auditory canal are the most known clinical symptoms in Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is more complicated than Bell's palsy. There is a better recovery in Bell's palsy than in Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
