[edit]Lead
[edit]Ana K.Spalding grew up with her family within the Panama Canal, where she started becoming interested in the sciences, due to her father’s work as an engineer, and her mother focusing her organization on natural resources.[1] She was encouraged by both to pursue environmental work, later receiving her Bachelor’s degree in International Economics from the University of Richmond in 1999, then a Masters degree in Marine Affairs and Policy from the University of Miami in 2004, and then a PhD in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2011.[2]
Career
[edit]After graduating the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies in 2011, Ana K. Spalding became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. There she spent two years and in 2015 she became a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama and an Assistant Professor at the School of Public Policy at Oregon State University.[3] Currently, she works at Oregon State University as an Assistant Professor at the School of Public Policy. She is a part of the Pacific Marine Energy Center (PMEC).[4]
Legacy and Impact
[edit]Ana Spalding founded the Adrienne Arsht Community-Based Resilience Solutions Initiative, which works to deepen research in resilience to climate change, both in communities and environments, with the ultimate goal of easing struggles globally that stem from climate change.[5] The initiative has founded two main programs, the Smithsonian Bird Friendly Coffee and Cocoa program and the Marine and Island Resilience program. Spalding’s work to advocate for the awareness of environmental resilience has expanded into widespread outreach, and a growing platform of global engagement.[6]
Additionally, Spalding is a part of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), being the first marine researcher to join out of a total of 40 scientists on staff. The STRI umbrellas over several outreach programs as well, educating a widespread demographic of people and reaching out to policy makers who can more directly influence policies relating to climate change.[7]
