List of structures built to be tombs for Egyptian kings.

Early Dynastic Period[edit]

Sites of early dynastic pharaonic tombs

The pharaohs of the he Early Dynastic Period were buried in mastabas at Umm El Qa'ab in Upper Egypt. The only exception was Nynetjer, who was buried at Saqqara.

Old Kingdom[edit]

The pyramids of Giza, tombs of 4th dynasty pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure

The Old Kingdom was the age of pyramid building. The pharaohs during this era built their pyramid-tombs near the then capital of Memphis in Lower Egypt. Among them are some of the most iconic structures of Ancient Egypt, like the pyramids of the Giza necropolis.

First Intermediate Period[edit]

The turbulent time of the First Intermediate Period did not allow for large tomb construction. The reign of most pharaohs during this era was short lived and the location of their tombs unknown.

Middle Kingdom[edit]

The Middle Kingdom Pyramid of Senusret II at El Lahun

At the beginning of the Middle Kingdom, during the 11th Dynasty, pharaohs were buried in saff tombs in lower Egypt. After the central government had moved back to lower Egypt at the start of the 12th Dynasty, pyramids were once again erected for the interment of pharaohs.

Second Intermediate Period[edit]

The political instability of the Second Intermediate Period prevented the construction of larger tombs. The known resting places of the pharaohs of the 17th Dynasty are pyramids located at Dra' Abu el-Naga' near Thebes, Upper Egypt.

New Kingdom[edit]

The Valley of the Kings, burial place of most New Kingdom pharaohs

The Valley of the Kings was the resting place of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, the 18th to 20th Dynasty. Well hidden Rock-cut tombs offered maximal protection against intruders.
