The Stairwell Carollers began in 1977 as a small group of University of Ottawa students in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Their main purpose was Christmas carolling in the residence stairwells for fellow students. Now a Bilingual a cappella choir, the Stairwell Carollers repertoire encompasses sacred and secular choral music from the Renaissance through to the Contemporary period as well as original contemporary carols and sacred pieces by their director and founder, Pierre Massie, as well as others.

In 1986, The Stairwell Carollers made their first recording, a vinyl record, produced by Gord Atkinson and the CFMO radio station in aid of Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa. The recording earned over $56,000 for the local Ronald McDonald House.

The choir has nine CD recordings, the net proceeds going to help various local charities. From net proceeds of CD sales and concert ticket sales the choir has given donations of more than $143,819 to various charities in Ottawa and Gatineau. This total includes the Stairwell Carollers Music Scholarship - from 2004 t0 2018 - granting a total of $17,500 in scholarships.The scholarship was available to Ottawa region music students who intended to continue studying music at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

In addition to hundreds of concerts performed in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, the choir sings in small towns across the Ottawa Valley such as Cumberland, Carp, Pakenham, Almonte, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Merrickville, Alexandria, in the Montebello, Quebec region and the city of Gatineau.

Many performances through the years have been benefit concerts for churches or other local charities. This has always been a mandate of the choir, and has included singing for convalescing patients in area hospitals and at soup kitchens such as Shepherds of Good Hope.

The Stairwell Carollers have won many choral competitions, most notably the Ontario Music Festival Association provincials competition.

The choir is led by their founder and director, Pierre Massie, since their inception in 1977. He is now retired, formerly music teacher and Arts Department head at Glebe Collegiate High School, OCDSB, Ottawa, On, Canada.

Pierre Massie is an award-winning composer, twice having won first prize in the Toronto Amadeus Choir Christmas Carol and Chanukah Song Writing Competition. His original choral works and arrangements are available on Sheet Music Plus.
