Rainer Baron Kensy von Echlin (* July 25th, 1961 in Speyer, Germany) is a German Agricultural Economist, Entrepreneur and Investor.

Life

Kensy von Echlin's ancestors[1] were first mentioned in 1296 as landowners “of Echline”[2] in the parish of Dalmeny, West Lothian, Edinburghshire, Scotland. They emigrated to Ireland (Irish branch of the family)[3] and to Lithuania (then called “Scottish branch”)[4] where they started with agriculture and forestry extending it in the 17th century to East Prussia. In the Battle of East Prussia in the Second World War they lost all possessions and fled to the Western parts of Germany. Kensy is the 13th Baron of Echlin[5][6][7] and is married to Anne Elisabeth (née Patterson).

Career

Echlin went to classical language grammar school and did his undergraduate and graduate studies in Agriculture and Econometrics in Germany at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel and the Technical University Berlin. In 1983 he was admitted as member in two dueling fraternities (Corpsstudent), and was 1988 Deputy Chairman of the Association of Fraternities (Corps) for the German-speaking countries. (KSCV).[8] He finished with graduate degrees (hons.) in Engineering and Agricultural Economics.[9] Subsequently, he completed his MBA in Finance (with honors) at the Isenberg School of Management of the University of Massachusetts . Doctoral Studies at the Hochschule St. Gallen followed where in 1994 he was awarded the Ph.D. in Finance with a dissertation on Japanese Multinationals.[10] After academia, he worked in project-management and portfolio management at the Caribbean Development Bank (Barbados) [11] and Credit Suisse (Tokyo).[12] [13] The next steps were in Derivative Structuring at Merrill Lynch Deutschland [14][15] and Salomon Brothers in London. [16] After some time at Rothschild (Zürich)[17] he was in charge of subsidiaries of RMF the then largest European Alternative Investment Firm. [18] Later in 2000, UBS asked him to serve as Global Head Alternative Investments.[19] Bear Stearns Asset Management (London) hired him to co-lead their European business. After the bankruptcy of that investment bank, he moved back to Switzerland for he was elected to become Board Member of a Subsidiary of Hottinger & Compagnie. [20] Since 2005 he was Curriculum Board Member of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association. [21][22] Since 2009 Board Member of Echlin AG, a single Family office, stemming from a participation in Echlin Inc. (NYSE: ECH)[23][24] Now, retired from office work, Kensy von Echlin was engaged in Advisory Boards of some Hedge Funds (Secquaero, Bainbridge among others .), still involved in a Multi Family Office[25][26] and an IT enterprise that focuses on IT security, prevention, detection and reversal of economic and IT Fraud and anti-fraud management systems.[27] In 2018 he completed the Senior Executive Programme at University of Oxford.[28]

Ecology and Philantrophies

As a member of Mensa International[29], Echlin supports the research into intelligence and cognitive sciences and the detection support and promotion of highly gifted children. Since 2007 “chevalier d’honneur” and since 2018 “chevalier de droit (KStJ In the English system) of the French branch of the Order of Saint John (Johanniterorden) where he co-ordinates the Swiss-French-German humanitarian activities in the French speaking world. (currently focussed on Madagascar).[30] [31] He supports the development of health care structures in rural areas in Haiti, advised 3 recent presidents there, and was advisor to the Minister of Economics and Finance and the state pension fund of Haiti. Furthermore, Kensy von Echlin chairs the Board of the Save-The-Lake-Foundation in East Afrika.[32] Since 2012, this NGO works on an Impact-Project, which ecologically cleans the Lake Victoria  of its non-indigenous  Water hyacinth pest, to reclaim the lake for the fishery livelihood of the population while producing ecological fertiliser for the local agriculture. The overall goal is to recreate sustainable autonomy of the local population. Since 2015 Save The Lake Foundation is mandated to biologically and engineering-wise restore the Nairobi Dam. Located in Nairobi, Kenya, it is a central problem of the in-famous Kibera-Settlement, the biggest slum in East Africa.
