Temu Jon Okun (born 1952) is an American writer, educator, and activist specializing in anti-racism. She is best known for the short but somewhat influential (and controverisal) paper White Supremacy Culture.b
Early life
[edit]Okun was born in New York City on March 15, 1952. Her father is Daniel Okun, an engineer and professor. His parents were non-observant socialist Jewish immigrants from Belorus. Her mother is Elizabeth Griffin, from Texas. She has one brother. Her family moved to Chapel Hill in North Carolina when she was a child, during the Civil Rights era. She attended a very liberal non-denominational church (her parents were both atheists). She attended Chapel Hill High School during its first year of integration, and continued to be involved in anti-racist activities. She attended Oberlin College, then studied sports medicine at the University of North Carolina.
Okun became an observant Jew in her mid-40s, but after visiting Israel and being appalled by the circumstances of the Palestinians she became less observant, and joined Jews for a Just Peace and the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions - USA.
