History

[edit]

The status of the customs road has been established by the « Convention franco-suisse relative à la construction et à l’exploitation de l’aéroport de Bâle-Mulhouse, à Blotzheim » (the French-Swiss agreement relative to the construction and usage of the Basel-Mulhouse airport in Blotzheim) concluded in 1949[1]. The road has been opened in 1953.

Status

[edit]

The airport and road are separated by a fence from the rest of the French customs territory. The road belongs to the sector of the airport which is affiliated with the Swiss services[1]. The French and Swiss authorities ensure a joint police control on this road. There are neither police nor customs checks performed on the road giving access to the airport at the French-Swiss border. Both governments still retain the right to perform checks if special circumstances justify it[1].
