To celebrate the 6 May 2010 launch of the Wikipedia book feature to the world at large, and encourage the creation of books from Wikipedia content, PediaPress, official partner of the Wikimedia Foundation, is giving away 100 coupons for free printed books. Each coupon has a value of $20 (USD) and will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis to the next 100 editors who create a community book (starting on 6 May 2010).[1]. If the price of the book comes to more than $20, then a $20 discount will be offered instead. Books in more than one volume will be considered as one book. Books must comply with all Wikipedia policies.

  1. ^ Limit of one (1) coupon per editor. Coupon expires 14 days after being issued. Sockpuppets, alternate accounts, blocked users. Coupons will be sent to the email address tied to the requesting account (set through Special:Preferences).

How to request a coupon

[edit]

To add your request, simply replace the end of the table below

|-
|}

with

|-
{{subst:User:Headbomb/PP-coupon|username=USERNAME|booktitle=BOOKTITLE|notes=}}
|-
|}

If you found a problem in the PDF of the book you created, simply describe it using |notes=, otherwise leave this blank. The last two columns are left blank and will be filled by User:Headbomb (me). It is also possible that I have "filed a request" on your behalf, I'm just using this page as a way to track progress and give me convenient links to relevant pages.

Reminders

[edit]
  • Remember that you can add a cover image and pick a default color for your book. See {{saved book}} for instructions.
  • User:WildBot reports common problems with books. Check the talk page of your book to see if your book contains any of them. (The bot can take a few hours before posting or updating a problem-report)
  • Consider adding {{Wikipedia-Books|BOOKTITLE}} in the see also sections of articles that are strongly related to your book, otherwise nobody will know your book exists. Adding the book to a navigational box is also a good idea.
  • Report any bugs you found in the PDF at Help:Books/Feedback. |bug=... can also be added to the {{saved book}} template to warn readers of critical issues (such as articles not-rendering).

Requests

[edit]

The first request (by Headbomb) is given for example only. Remember to add your request at the bottom of the table. Remember that coupons will be sent to the email address you specified in Special:Preferences so make sure it is up to date. I'll try to be as quick as possible in my replies, but please allow some time for emails to be sent. Also check you spam filter settings.

2010-05-10-11:44 Ucucha (talk · contribs · email) Book:Transandinomys (PDF) Measurement table in Transandinomys bolivaris looks weird (bug 842). This is limited to the PDF, the printed book looks fine however. Yes Yes
2010-05-13-03:37 Cryptic C62 (talk · contribs · email) Book:Chess openings (PDF) The PDF is fine, however the printed book stretches chess tables making them very ugly (specifically, some rows are taller than others). See bug 843. Problem fixed. It is possible that chess tables split on two pages, but this is a relatively rare occurance (bug 845). Yes Yes

Headbomb: Weird I never had any problems with it, or lost my work. Either way, both PDF and printed books look fine.

2010-05-14-19:15 Andreas Kaufmann (talk · contribs · email) Book:Recreational mathematics (PDF) Andreas Kaufmann: There is a problem with a table in Polyiamond in PDF.
Headbomb: Fixed. The problem was that the table had a cell with 12 large images in them. I did some table-fu, and now it looks just fine. I also made the images smaller, because the table was awkwardly-wide IMO.
Headbomb: PDF looks fine. Printed book contains chess articles, so it contains the same ugly chess table as above (bug 843) Problem fixed. It is possible that chess tables split on two pages, but this is a relatively rare occurance (bug 845).

2010-08-21-18:46 Forty two (talk · contribs · email) Book:Be Wikipedia Wise (PDF) Headbomb: Everything looks fine. As of writing, some navboxes are still included, but that's a caching issue. I might have missed some however, in which case you can include the navbox template in Category:Exclude in print. Make sure however, that this category is not transcluded to other pages, otherwise these page won't print at all.

Forty two: I have added the category in the remaining navboxes. I hope I haven't broken anything. Also the cover image is not being rendered in the pdf.
Headbomb: That is normal. The cover is used for the automatic generation of books in the PediaPress catalog, and will (not yet implemented) be used as a default cover when ordering.

2010-08-23-23:17 Fetchcomms (talk · contribs · email) Book:Wikipedia: The Missing Manual (PDF) Fetchomms Hey, am I allowed to get a book made by someone else? I think that this one would be a good as a "Wikipedia rulebook" (although they are not rules). If it's OK, I'll take it; if not, I'll make a new one.
Headbomb To get a coupon, you need to create an original community book, this one was made by Forty two. However, once you get the coupon use it coupon on any book you want. So you could create a book on say ... Egyptian Pharaohs, and use your coupon for ordering Book:Be Wikipedia Wise.
Fetchcomms That works fine with me! I actually know just the book to make :) And, done.

2010-09-22-15:59 Casperthegoth (talk · contribs · email) Book:Air Quality Monitoring (PDF) Headbomb Looks fine. I made some tweaks, but it could use more. (Specifically, when you have parentheses in titles, it's a good idea to rename the article. Something like Ministry of the Environment (Ontario)Ontarian Ministry of the Environment, and Mercury (element)Mercury. WildBot will give you a full list of suggestions soon. Also there is a map in Metro Vancouver that doesn't render correctly. See bug#759.
CasperthegothI have made changes to the article titles in many cases. I have re-ordered some. Metro Vancouver will be removed, it is not the most critical agency to list, and it actually is the only one that is not strictly environmental. Thanks for the notes!
