Das Wentzinger-Gymnasium ist ein allgemeinbildendes Gymnasium in der Stadt Freiburg im Breisgau. Neben einem naturwissenschaftlichen und einem sprachlichen Profil besitzt es auch als eine von 38 Schulen in Baden-Württemberg ein Musik-Profil und zusätzlich ein bilinguales Profil im Fach Französisch, das auf das Doppelabitur Abibac hinführt. Momentan werden im Wentzinger-Gymnasium rund 1000 Schüler unterrichtet, die größtenteils aus der Stadt Freiburg und dem Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald stammen. Der Name des Gymnasiums bezieht sich auf den Freiburger Künstler und Ehrenbürger Johann Christian Wentzinger (1710–1797). Ab dem Schuljahr 2013/14 ist die Schule wieder zurückgekehrt zum neunjährigen Bildungsgang. G8-Züge werden gar nicht mehr angeboten. Das betrifft sämtliche Neuanmeldungen für die 5. Klassen.
The Wentzinger grammar school, Freiburg, not only has a scientific and a linguistic profile, but as one of only 38 schools in Baden-Württemberg it also hsa a music profile and a bilingual profile for French, which leads to the Abibac, a double high school diploma. At present, around 1000 pupils are taught at the Wentzinger grammar school, most of them from the city of Freiburg and the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald (Black Forest). The name of the grammar school refers to the Freiburg artist and honorary citizen Johann Christian Wentzinger (1710-1797). The school returned to a nine-year curriculum. The so-called G8 curriculum that leads to the Hig hSchool diploma in only 8 years instead of nine, is no longer effered. This applies for all new registrations. Ongoing G8 classes are maintained.
Geschichte und Lage
[edit]1972 wurde der erste Bauabschnitt der jetzigen Wentzinger-Schule bezogen. Zwei Jahre später war der Gesamtkomplex fertiggestellt. Er umfasst das zweitgrößte Gymnasium und die größte Realschule in Freiburg. Die beiden Schulen arbeiten selbständig und unter eigener Leitung. Sie benutzen jedoch die naturwissenschaftlichen, musischen und technischen Fachräume sowie die Sporthallen und die Freisportanlagen gemeinsam. Sie arbeiten in vielen Bereichen und bei vielen Entscheidungen kooperativ zusammen.
Das Gebäude liegt innerhalb eines öffentlich zugänglichen Naherholungsgebiet, auf welchem 1986 die Landesgartenschau von Baden-Württemberg stattfand. Im Südteil ist die Realschule, im Nordteil das Gymnasium untergebracht. Die Sporthallen, das Freisportgelände und das von den Schulen stark genutzte Westbad befinden sich in unmittelbarer Nähe. Ebenfalls im Gebäude befindet sich eine Zweigstelle der Stadtbücherei.
Gut ausgebaute Radwege führen in Richtung Landwasser, Lehen, Betzenhausen und Innenstadt. Schulbusse bzw. Linienbusse (Linie 10/36/7212/Tuniberg Express) gewährleisten eine Verbindung in alle westlichen Stadtteile, nach Umkirch, Hochdorf, Tuniberg und March. Wenige Gehminuten entfernt liegt außerdem die Haltestelle "Neue Messe" der Breisgau-S-Bahn. Mit dem Schuljahr 2013/2014 bietet das Wentzinger-Gymnasium als erstes öffentliches Gymnasium Freiburgs nach Einführung des Abiturs nach Klasse 12 wieder G9-Klassen an.
One part of the school was opened in 1972. Two years later, the whole building complex was completed, the grammar school now plus a comprehensive school. The Wentzinger grammar is the second biggest grammar school, and the comprehensive the biggest of the secondary schools. Both schools work independently of one another under their own management. They use the science, technical and usic rooms together, as well as the gym and the outside sports facilities. They cooperate in several areas and make many decisions together.
The building complex is located within a puplic recreation area, the venue of the State Garden Show of Baden-Württemberg in 1986. The comprehensive school is siutated in the southern part and the grammar school in the northern part of the building complex. The gym,the outside sport facilities and the swimming pool "Westbad", frequently used by the pupils, are all nearby. The building also accomodates a branch of the public library.
Good cycle ways lead in the direction of Landwasser, Lehen, Betzenhausen and the city center. School buses or regular buses ensure a connection to all the western districts of Freiburg, namely Umkirch, Hochdorf, Tuniberg and March. The train station is only a few minutes´walk away. The Wentzinger Gymnasium is the first public grammar school in Freiburg that, starting with the school year 2013/2014, returned to the G9 course system, offering A-Level, after cmpletion of the 12th grade in Germany.

[edit]Das Wentzinger-Gymnasium bietet verschiedene Sprachen sowie ein Musik- und ein naturwissenschaftliches Profil an. In der 5. Klasse hat man die Wahl zwischen Englisch und Französisch sowie Französisch bilingual als erste Fremdsprache. Auch das Musikprofil ist ab der 5. Klasse wählbar. In der 6. Klasse folgt die Wahl der zweiten Fremdsprache: Schüler mit Englisch als erster Fremdsprache haben die Wahl zwischen Französisch und Latein als zweite Fremdsprache. Schüler mit Französisch oder Französisch bilingual als erster Fremdsprache müssen Englisch als zweite Fremdsprache wählen.
Ab der 9. Klasse müssen die Schüler ein angebotenes Profil wählen. Das sprachliche Profil bietet Spanisch als dritte Fremdsprache an. Im naturwissenschaftlichen Profil besuchen Schüler das Fach Naturwissenschaft und Technik (NWT). Es ist außerdem möglich Musik als Profilfach zu wählen, sofern man bereits in der Unterstufe im Musikprofil war oder eine besondere musikalische Begabung nachweisen kann. Die genannten Fächer gelten als Hauptfächer und werden vierstündig unterrichtet. Ab der Oberstufe können sich die Schüler ihre Hauptfächer gemäß der Baden-Württembergischen Vorschriften selbst zusammenstellen.
Organization and subjects offered
[edit]The Wentzinger grammar school offers various languages as well as a music and a natural science profile. In the 5th grade, pupils have the choice between English and French as well as a French bilingual class, in which French is the first foreign language. Also, the music profile can be selected from the 5th grade. In the 6th grade pupils choose a second foreign language: those who have English as their first foreign language can choose between French and Latin; those who have French as their first foreign language or come from a French bilingual class must choose English as their second foreign language.
Starting from the 9th grade, pupils have to choose a particular profile. The language profile offers Spanish as a third foreign language. In the natural science profile, students take Science and Technology. It is also possible to choose music as a profile subject, as long as the pupil has taken the music profile in elementary school or shows musical talent. Musikprofil
[edit]Das Wentzinger Gymnasium bietet musikalisch interessierten Kindern an, einen besonderen Bildungsgang mit verstärktem Musikunterricht zu besuchen. Der Musikunterricht in den Musikklassen soll in erster Linie Freude und Interesse an Musik wecken und zum Verständnis der Musik in ihren vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen anleiten - sowohl im praktischen Umgang (Singen, Instrumentalspiel, Improvisation, Bewegung u. a.) als auch in der Begegnung mit der Musik verschiedener Epochen und Kulturen. Ein kontinuierlicher musiktheoretischer Lehrgang tritt ergänzend hinzu. Neben dem Unterricht in der Klasse steht den Schülerinnen und Schülern die Teilnahme an den Arbeitsgemeinschaften offen (derzeit Chor, Orchester, Bigband, Rhythmik). Das Erlernen eines Instruments ist erwünscht, aber keine Bedingung für den Besuch des Musikzuges.
In den Klassen 5 bis 7 sind drei bzw. vier Stunden Musik pro Woche vorgesehen, wobei musisch kreative Projekte ergänzend hinzutreten. In den Klassen 8 bis 10 ist Musik Profilfach und damit reguläres Kernfach (wie z. B. eine dritte Fremdsprache). In der Oberstufe ist es schließlich möglich, sich mit einem Profilkurs Musik für das Abitur zu qualifizieren.
Music profile
[edit]The Wentzinger grammar school offers children who are interested in music the possibility to take a special course with additional music lessons. The music lessons are primarily intended to encourage joy and interest in music and to understand music in its various manifestations; practically (singing, playing an instrument, improvisation, movement, etc.), and in looking at the music of different epochs and cultures. A further seminar on the theory of music complements this. In addition to lessons in the classroom, pupils are also free to participate in workshops (currently a choir, an orchestra, a big band and rhythmicity classes). The learning of an instrument is desired, but not a condition for attending additional music lessons.
From 5th to 7th grade, three or four hours of music per week are planned, with additional creative music projects. From 8th to 10th grade, music is a profile subject and thus a regular core subject (such as a third foreign language). In high school, it is possible to qualify for the final examination after graduating from a course profile in music.
