  • In a site inspection, the EPA found toxic levels of cyanide, iron, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the sediment and surface water samples of the Coney Island Creek.
  • However, the EPA has not yet called for an official cleanup of the creek or designated it as a Superfund site despite the community still using the creek for recreational purposes.
  • Add information about restoration projects that have reduced the toxicity of the creek using information found on the official NYC Department of Environmental Protection website. -> (Projects have reduced the sewage content by 68%).

Toxicity in the Creek

  • List all of the pollutants spilled into the creek such as oil, sewage from an apartment complex, construction, and more!
  • Add some information regarding toxic waste pollution and DDT spillage in the creek
  • Mention the toxic oxygen levels

Effects on Wildlife

  • Add a section about wildlife such as fish, harms to the environment, humans, and wildlife, and possible solutions and ongoing efforts to clean the creek by organizations such as the Billion Oyster Project.
  • Currently the Billion Oyster Project is helping revive and establish the oyster population.
  • The oysters will help improve the water quality of the creek by purifying the water to get rid of pollutants left by sewage waste and toxic chemicals.
