Evaluate an article

[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Name of article: Crime in Nigeria
  • Briefly describe why you have chosen this article to evaluate. My country for this semester is Nigeria. I am interested in the area of crime and I found the link to this page on the main "Nigeria" page on Wikipedia. I thought this article could be an interesting starting point. When I clicked on the link to the full "Crime in Nigeria" page, I was shocked at how little is included in this article.

Lead

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic? No - the introductory sentence is simply, "Crime in Nigeria is investigated by the Nigerian Police." This sentence does not tell me much about the topic. While it is clear and concise, it is not an appropriate introduction.
  • Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections? No, the lead is simply a single sentence followed by the table of contents and a picture.
  • Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article? No. Again the lead is very simple.
  • Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed? The lead is inadequate. It could be considered concise - but it is missing a lot of information.

Content

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article's content relevant to the topic? The article's content is relevant - but there is not enough information. The article discusses crimes by type, including murder, corruption, organized crime, human trafficking, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, piracy, and terrorism. The description of each type of crime is brief - and the sections are not all encompassing. There are other types of crime in Nigeria that do not fall into one of these categories.
  • Is the content up-to-date? The content is somewhat recent - but a lot of the statistics and figures could be updated. For example, the statistic about murder rates in the murder section is 5 years old.
  • Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong? Yes, there is content missing. There are crimes that do not fit into the categories in the article. All of the information that is included belongs on this page - but there is a significant amount of information missing.
  • Does the article deal with one of Wikipedia's equity gaps? Does it address topics related to historically underrepresented populations or topics? There are some topics related to ethnic groups, which have been historically underrepresented. For example, the article states that organized crime is often created around ethnic lines.

A majority of the facts are linked to reliable sources such as peer-reviewed journals and United Nations organizations. • Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
  • Are the sources current? r
  • Are the sources written by a diverse spectrum of authors? Do they include historically marginalized individuals where possible?
