Evaluate an article

[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • The name of the article is Identity tourism
  • Why you have chosen this article to evaluate
  • The reason I chose this article to evaluate is because the subject Identity tourism is important and quite relevant to the general discussion of tourism industry in this day and age. Unfortunately, the manner in which this article was done was reckless and does not cover all the important aspects related to the subject. Additionally, the article has been nominated to be deleted yet the subject is quite relevant and timely. Therefore, I volunteer to work on this article for information's sake.

Lead

[edit]
Guiding questions

Unfortunately, the lead has a poor introductory sentence which in fact does a poor job of defining Identity tourism. Instead of a straight forward description of Identity tourism, the description splits between attempting to describe Identity tourism and ethnic identities. Additionally, the description does not give a good description of the major sections in the article. However, I do propose a change of topic from Identity tourism to Identity tourism in Cyberspace because the main content talks about Identity Tourism in the Cyberspace sphere.

Content

[edit]
Guiding questions
I have stated that the topic does not sufficiently cover the content of the article because the content is not simply Identity Tourism but Tourism in the cyberspace. Nonetheless, the content is not up to date because the article uses old sources on an issue that is quite relevant today. Some of the content missing would include
  • Meaning of identity in cyberspace
  • Types of identity tourism and
  • Impact of identity tourism

Tone and Balance

[edit]
Guiding questions

The tone is neutral and does not attempt to sway readers to favor one position or the other because there are no opposing views. The information is simply attempting to explain and understand the various aspects of identity tourism and how cyberspace may have changed it.

Sources and References

[edit]
Guiding questions

The article mentions work by Lisa Nakamura who is the leader of identity tourism in cyberspace. other sources are also included that have information regarding cyberspace and their influence on culture. These sources are, therefore, quite reliable on the topic. However, the sources are not timely since most of the sources are from early 2000s which shows that the article is in real need for revision an updating. Nevertheless, the authors chosen do not represent a historically diverse group of people. Therefore, more sources need to be added to make the article current and therefore relevant.

Sources and references evaluation

[edit]

Organization

[edit]
Guiding questions

The article does not have grammatical errors. However, it is not very well written because the introduction is not very clear and is not well researched or broken down into enough subtopics to make it outstanding by covering all the major points of the topic.

Organization evaluation

Images and Media

[edit]
Guiding questions

It should be noted that no images are used in the article yet use of images make the articles visually appealing and they also make the article more understandable to the readers.

Checking the talk page

[edit]
Guiding questions

Unfortunately, the talk page of the article has received very little action over the years. There is only one comment on the talk page which is relevant and it points out that the topic is talking about two separate points, ethnicity in tourism and people professing two identities. This is why the topic needs a revision as well as the content. The article is however part of the WikiProjects in the field of Sociology. Notably, the topic is a fresh reflection on the impact of technology on culture because I never thought that people actually visit the internet to have a better understanding of an identity and such visits would even influence who they became going forward. This was a fresh perspective from the discussions we have had in class.

Overall impressions

[edit]
Guiding questions

Overall, the article has unlimited ability to be improved. The reason is mainly because it is quite relevant to the time period we are in and the activities that people are engaging in the internet. While the article does a bad job in covering the subject adequately, it does an interesting job of uncovering a topic that has long been ignored yet affects so many people in the world. Nevertheless, a lot more time needs to be spent to improve the content and complete the research that was began years ago.

Optional activity

[edit]
  • Nevertheless, the question still remains, how far can we link virtual reality to Identity Tourism on cyberspace and what is its comparison to traditional Identity Tourism that is done physically.
