Evaluate an article
[edit]This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.
- Name of article: (link) Mexica
- Briefly describe why you have chosen this article to evaluate.
As this class focuses, on the art of the Mexica people, this article is relevant to the course
Lead
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic?
- Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections?
- Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article?
- Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed?
Lead evaluation
[edit]The lead of this page mostly focuses on the multitude of names that have been given to the Mexica people over the years. While it has a concise introductory sentence, it does not include a description of the article's major sections. On the other hand, the article only has one section, "History", so this might be the reason behind that. I think it could be a bit more structured and could give more of an overview of the general topic.
Content
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Is the article's content relevant to the topic?
- Is the content up-to-date?
- Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong?
Content evaluation
[edit]All of the content in the article is relevant and up-to-date. The article seems to gloss over the history of the Mexica people; it could be beneficial to add some more detail.
Tone and Balance
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Is the article neutral?
- Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
- Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
- Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another?
Tone and balance evaluation
[edit]The article remains neutral and unbiased throughout its entirety.
Sources and References
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information?
- Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
- Are the sources current?
- Check a few links. Do they work?
Sources and references evaluation
[edit]Most of the facts are cited from relevant scholarly or encyclopedia articles, the majority of which were published within the last twenty years. The last sentence in the article has a "citation needed" banner above it. Links to other wikipedia pages work, but all sources are offline so there are no links otherwise.
Organization
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Is the article well-written - i.e. Is it concise, clear, and easy to read?
- Does the article have any grammatical or spelling errors?
- Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic?
Organization evaluation
[edit]There are no grammatical errors in the article and it is easy enough to read. However, I believe there should be further sections that perhaps deal with Mexica culture and language more thoroughly.
Images and Media
[edit]- Guiding questions
- Does the article include images that enhance understanding of the topic?
- Are images well-captioned?
- Do all images adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations?
- Are the images laid out in a visually appealing way?
Images and media evaluation
[edit]Images are well-captioned and adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations. There are only two, so my only suggestion would be to add more!
Checking the talk page
[edit]- Guiding questions
- What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic?
- How is the article rated? Is it a part of any WikiProjects?
- How does the way Wikipedia discusses this topic differ from the way we've talked about it in class?
Talk page evaluation
[edit]This article is part of 6 WikiProjects; In 5 of these, it is rated as a stub-class and in one ("Mesoamerica/Aztec") it is rated high importance. The entire talk page is devoted to whether or not this article should be merged with the article for Aztec peoples. While some users believe it should, as the term "Aztec" refers to the Mexica people, others have argued that not all Mexicas were Aztecs, so the pages should stay separated. Overall, the discussion is rather similar to the one we had in class concerning these terms.
Overall impressions
[edit]- Guiding questions
- What is the article's overall status?
- What are the article's strengths?
- How can the article be improved?
- How would you assess the article's completeness - i.e. Is the article well-developed? Is it underdeveloped or poorly developed?
Overall evaluation
[edit]Overall, I believe this article has a good foundation that can be expanded. The history section has all of the major points, but should be developed. In addition, other sections should be add about Mexica culture, religion, language, and subgroups - the latter seems to be a large point of discussion in the talk page. I would consider this article to be underdeveloped.
