Haakon IV | Christopher I |
The Halland War (Norwegian: Halland krigen) also known as the Halland Campaign (Norwegian: Hallandsaksjonen) was a conflict between Norway and Denmark in 1256-1257 due to the looting of Norwegian ships in Danish seas.
Background
[edit]Due to the sacking of Norwegian ships in Danish seas, Haakon sought to get compensation from the Danes and sought alliances with the opponents of the ruling royal line in Denmark.[1] This led to Haakon to become allied with Birger Jarl for a joint Swedish-Norwegian invasion into Halland and Scania where the Earl Birger agreed to contribute with 5000 men[2], but the Swedes eventually abandoned the agreement (see Treaty of Lödöse). It is believed that Haakon also was politically and economically motivated and had intentions of conquering all of Scania due to the trade with the Hanseatics, the lucrative herring fishery in the region and income due to taxes he would be able to give the ships passing through.[3]
