Lessons in Humility
[edit]Sikh Gurus have been known to impart lessons in humility during their lifetimes. One such famous incident as noted by Macauliffe in Sikh Religion - Vol 4 [i] is from the life of Guru Har Krishan. Once on the way to Delhi from Punjab, Guru was staying at Panjokhara, near present day Ambala. A very learned Pundit called Lal Chand came visiting Him with the intent to test Him on the knowledge of Bhagavad Gita noting that the Guru's name was similar to that of Lord Krishna. The Guru with the intention to cure him of his pride said that he does not need Him, anyone could do that. Lal Chand brought a mute and ignorant water carrier called Chhajju[ii] before the Guru. When the Guru placed his stick on his head, the water carrier gave such learned replies, that the Pundit stood in astonished silence. He accordingly begged Guru’s pardon for his mistake and became Guru's disciple.
