LAB 4: WORK ON YOUR OWN

[edit]

I. Rules, Custom, and Community:

[edit]

Read about anything else you need to. Learn how to Redirect, Merge, and Add Pictures. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Help:Contents/Editing_Wikipedia

Also, learn about the copyleft/license wiki (and others) use to allow free access: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License

Now might be the time when you realize that you’re doing work for this place for free, and you don’t even own anything or really have anything to show for it. Yep. And 100,000 other people do it, too. Go figure.

II. Be Active:

[edit]

By this due date, you need to have 25 edits in articles, not counting the group articles from last time, or User: or Talk: spaces. A reminder of some easy ones. 1) Deletion Discussions. Wiki has three types of ways articles are deleted. 2) Cleanup, wikify, dead-end pages, and orphan control. 3) Finish some stubs. 4) Do whatever you want. Find articles. Mark articles. Edit articles. Talk about Articles.

III. Do At Least Two Articles:

[edit]

Now I’d like you to do a couple of real articles, preferably ones that tie in with your major, your termpaper, or something “academic.” Basically, wiki around and find something to add, either adding stubs, fleshing out stubs, or editing a longer article.

I don’t give you much direction, since it really depends what you’re doing, and how. Talk to me if you have questions.

Alternative: Translate into English. If you are fairly fluent in another language, there is a list of articles that people would like to see translated. Sometimes these have been auto-translated by a web applet, and read as though they were. Any improvement would be really helpful. Don’t worry if you aren’t perfect. Be Bold!

Notice that you have a longer time before this assignment is due, so you probably want to look for sources, read about what’s there, check out some Talk: pages and similar pages. This will be hard to do the night before it’s due.

CLASS NOTE:

IF YOU THINK WIKI IS REALLY FUN, I HAVE A WIKI LAB 5 THAT YOU CAN DO TO REPLACE ANOTHER LAB. LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.
