Watkins had two sons, Charles Howard Watkins and William S. Watkins, and a daughter, Amy Lee Watkins, with Rose Shaw. Charles Howard and William, also actors, died in 1887, the former of consumption and the latter was buried after a fortnight of his brother death. As if the proximity of the deaths weren't odd enough, William's death was caused by a rare fatality, namely a grape seed lodged in the appendix which caused an inflammation and abscess, leading to a perforation of the intestinal canal.
