Pioneering in the Far East
[edit]In 1882, Helms was living in London[1][2] and published Pioneering in the Far East and Journeys to California in 1849 and to the White Sea in 1878, a history of his adventures in Southeast Asia, Sarawak, and California. The book was based on extensive notes and journals recorded during his travels, and provided detailed descriptions of the geography and cultures he encountered.
The book also attempted to impartially chronicle the dispute between Rajah James Brooke and his nephew, John Brooke Johnson Brooke, which resulted in the disinheriting of the latter. Helms and a circle of friends, including Paul Tidman and Charles Grant, who had worked closely with John Brooke Brooke in Sarawak had been disappointed with the portrayal of the dispute in various biographies published since their deaths in 1864, which had implied John Brooke had behaved erratically and dishonorably.[3][4] Helms attempted to defend John Brooke's actions using personal letters and published documents.[5]
The book generally received good reviews, and is still in print today. It is noted for rare, first-hand accounts with Mads Lange of Bali; King Ang Duoung of Cambodia; King Monkut of Siam; and the Chinese insurrection in Sarawak.[6][a][7][8][9]
Return to the Far East (1890-1901)
[edit]Helms returned to Sarawak around 1890, where he prospected for various ores and minerals.[10][11] and was in Malaysia around 1899–1903, where he was involved in establishing the Temelong Hydraulic Tin Mining Company in Perak.[12] The mine did not do well, and eventually failed in 1903, and Helms returned to his family in London.[13][14][15]
Later Life
[edit]Helms spent the remainder of his life in Hampstead, England. In his later years he continued to write and published numerous articles on the far east in newspapers, magazines, and journals.[9] Helms died in Hampstead on July 26, 1918.[16][17]
Helms' Grand Daughter Estelle Gardner inherited Helms' Journals and notes, which she perused and wrote Footnote to Sarawak [Notes on the Life of Ludvig Verner Helms]. She contributed two articles on Helms' life to the Sarawak Museum Journal, and donated several items to the Sarawak Museum.[9]
