A Tuba to Cuba is a 2018 American documentary film about the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The leader of New Orleans' famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band seeks to fulfill his late father's dream of retracing their musical roots to the shores of Cuba in search of the indigenous music that gave birth to New Orleans jazz. The film was directed by T. G. Herrington and Danny Clinch and narrated by Ben Jaffe whose parents founded Preservation Hall in a segregated 1961 New Orleans.[2][3]

Synopsis

[edit]

Production

[edit]

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band was invited to go to Cuba by a cultural exchange program. At the time of the invitation the U.S. still had an embargo in effect with Cuba. When the embargo was lifted their plans came into focus and they decided to take a camera crew along. Jaffe invited Danny Clinch to join the project, and this snowballed into the production of A Tuba to Cuba. [4]The film was shot in New Orleans, Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos.[3]

Reception

[edit]

A Tuba to Cuba celebrates the triumph of the human spirit expressed through the universal language of music and challenges us to resolve to build bridges, not walls.[5]

T.G. Herrington and Danny Clinch’s exhilarating record of a journey to Cuba (and so much more) by the PHJB is very likely to become a classic of the music documentary genre[6]
