Got it
Thanks for explaining that typographical quirk, Greeves.
And, yes, I will try to sign off with the four little tildes. Blondeonblonde 23:33, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Calling in a favour
Hey Greeves. Remembering that nice little comment about how "if I needed anything, just ask you,", I've decided to call in that favour. If you could please approve GrooveBot to use AWB in the Bots section, that would be great. It is currently approved for trial, (50 edits) and a few newsletter deliveries. If you could help me out, that would be great, if not, I'm sure that the AWB page will get updated soon. Thanks, GrooveDog (talk) 03:08, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Yet another question
Greeves, I created an entry for Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. However, it did not capitalize Chamber or Orchestra. What did I do wrong? How do I fix it?
Also, I want to add it to the category:culture in winnipeg. How do I do this?
Thanks. Blondeonblonde 16:33, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
- The first letter of the article name is capitalized automatically though other letters are not. The "C" in "Chamber" and the "O" in "Orchestra" need to be capitalized manually. I moved the page using the move button at the top of the page to the proper title. On a side note, normally the other letters of the title are not capitalized, even though it is a title, but proper nouns are different (of course).
- To add Category:Culture of Winnipeg to it, (assuming that you meant of as opposed to in) simply type

at the bottom of the page. I added the category in this diff. On a side note, to just write out the name of the category with a link, type:Category:Culture of Winnipeg
.
- Also, as you can see in this diff from Realkyhick, he added a tag that said that there were no references in the article to prove that anything that you wrote was true. I added a few references (as well as a few other things) like this:
- I created a new section called "References".
- I typed
reflist
under it. - I added references by typing

or
. - To add the references I found off the web in the proper format I used cite web (usage instructions at Template:Cite web).
- When I used the same reference multiple times and I named the reference, I typed

to shorten code and not list the reference twice in the reference section.
- Anyway, I hope that I answered your question and that you understand citing sources to make sure that the articles that you write are verifiable. Greeves (talk • contribs) 02:16, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Boy, this is complicated!
Hey, Greeves, thanks for the reference tutorial. But almost every article I see on Wikipedia does not cite references, or at least they don't have footnotes. I'm not sure I understand why that piece needed references but others don't -- or at least they don't have warnings on them saying that references are needed.
Blondeonblonde 02:52, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- They should have had references like it says in the policy on verifiability and the guideline on citing sources:
“ | The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth[...] Wikipedia:Verifiability is one of Wikipedia's [three] core content policies. | ” |
— Wikipedia:Verifiability |
“ | Wikipedia is by its very nature a work by people with widely different knowledge and skills. The reader needs to be assured that the material within it is reliable: this is especially important where statements are made about controversial issues. | ” |
— Wikipedia:Citing sources |
- So citing sources is required, though many articles still don't, unfortunately. The reason that this article was tagged as having no references, is because somebody noticed. It seems that more people have been tagging these articles recently. If you look at any article in the list of featured articles, the articles on Wikipedia up to our highest standard, they will all have references. And, it is good to get into the habit of using references from the start. Greeves (talk • contribs) 03:23, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
D'oh!

Yet more confusion
Greeves,
I tried to make a simple clarification to the second paragraph of the Manitoba article today. Somehow my computer blew away a section of the article at the bottom and I got an automated vandalism warning. I think this happened twice.
The sentence as it stands reads: "Its capital and largest city (containing over one half the provincial population (around 700,000)) is Winnipeg."
This could be read to mean that the province's population is 700,000, not Winnipeg's.
I want to change this to read, "Its capital and largest city (containing about 700,000 of the province's 1.1 million people) is Winnipeg."
However, when I try to do this, my computer gives me an error beep and it seems to blow away a section of the type from the article. I'm wondering if this has something to do with my outdate Mac-explorer browser.)
Have you heard of this problem before? Also can you show me how to explain myself to the robot so I don't have this vandalism accusation on my record? Blondeonblonde 19:48, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
- As this has happened in the past, I imagine that this is due to your Internet browser. Some older browsers have trouble editing pages larger than 32kb. To prevent this, you have two options:
- Upgrade your browser. Personally, I recommend Mozilla Firefox if you have the minimum system requirements for Macs.
- Section editing. Beside each section title, there is a button that says [edit]. Unfortunately, if you are editing the lead, that is a problem. To edit just the lead, you need to type this into your address bar:
http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Article_title_here_using_underscores_as_spaces&action=edit§ion=0
- ...replacing "Article_title_here_using_underscores_as_spaces" with the article title with underscores (ie. _ ) in the place of spaces. Another easier way to edit the lead on it's own is through a modification. At User:Blondeonblonde/monobook.js, you can modify the user interface - this page is only editable by you and admins. If you would like, I can install a script that adds another button beside the "edit this page" button that lets you edit the lead.
- As for the removing the warnings from your record, there is not really a record. After one passes their last warning, any user can report this to the admins to be blocked through WP:AIV. I will leave a message on your talk page saying that this is due to a bug, in case people look at it in the future. I do notice that you tried to post to User:ClueBot/FalsePositives; I'm afraid you were only supposed to replace "YOURUSERNAME" with your username, not the entire line. I do not think that posting a report there is needed, however, as I think that that page is more for bot errors and it was right to think that you were probably a vandal as you erased most of the page.
AFC Drive - Last Day!
As I write this message, we officially have 2 hours left before the end of the drive. Prizes will be awarded tomorrow, so don't worry, I haven't forgotten. It's been a great drive, with tons of work accomplished. Thanks, everyone. GrooveDog GrooveBot 21:12, 15 August 2007 (UTC) Automaticlly delivered by GrooveBot at 21:12, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

URGH! THIS IS AN ANGRY LETTER! YOU DELETED ALL MY PAGES! I NEVER GOT TO PRINT THEM OUT! YOU DELETED ALL MY TIME! I AM A WRITER! YOU ARE SO ON MY LIST! (okay... i have no list) BUT! I AM MAD! PLEASE ANSWER ME. BEATLES RULE!!! go fonz! 20:58, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Hello. There is no need for caps lock. Please remain calm and civil. Your subpages were deleted as a result of a recent community discussion (located at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Subpages of FonzieBaby). Wikipedia is not a free web host I'm afraid. I will give you the opportunity to print them out, however. Simply provide me with an e-mail address and I will send copies of the pages to you (like it says on my userpage) as long as you remain civil and do not recreate them as sub-pages of your Wikipedia userpage. Greeves (talk • contribs) 21:14, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Not sure if you were or weren't using it, but in the future, Special:Prefixindex might help with that. 65.93.29.95 13:25, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
Hello. I'm so sorry about being mad and using caps lock. I didnt know that you could send me what was on those pages! I promise not to recreate the pages. They were just some writing pieces I worked for a very long time on. If you look at some, they are very long, detailed, and thoughtful. I appreciate dearly your calmness and politeness, which were things I lacked. I just was a little shaken when all my pieces were missing. I'm sure you understand! We were all new Once! Thank you again and I appologise again! My email is peachypoo32@hotmail.com. Thank you! You would not believe how much better I feel right now! Thanks again! Canadian Cabal
Oh Greeves...I've seen some nasty things before, but this really makes me stop liking Canada (and I really liked it over there) :P You'd better watch out! :) Giggy Talk 07:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks ;-)
Thanks for the quick response to my userpage deletion request. Am I stuck with having "...Notice: You are re-creating a page that was previously deleted..."??? I was hoping to go back to the way it was (which, of course, was nothing). --User101010 23:16, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
Could you also please issue a warning to Baseball Bugs for making two edits to my user page without my permission? --User101010 01:40, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry that I am late in replying (I have been getting worse and worse at fast replies lately, but that should change). There is nothing that I can do about the notice on your page. Some people choose to put blankuserpage on their page to show that they do not wish to have a user page, or some just redirect their user page to their user talk page (using
#REDIRECT User talk:User101010
). Regarding warning Baseball Bugs however, I cannot do any more about that than you can - just speak to him/her. Greeves (talk • contribs) 16:09, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Mentoring
Hola Mentors!
Im sending you this reminder because you volunteered to mentor my students in English Advanced B as they become contributing members of the Wikipedia community. We start working with Wikipedia in earnest next week. I ask you to take a look at your entry in the Mentor Table at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors
Please update the information, esp. with what your technical and informational expertise is or, if you have decided that you no longer want to participate, please remove your information from the table. Please watch the pages associated with the project. Students will contact you via your user page and as soon as my students have user pages, I will put them on the navigation bar associated with the project.
I don’t need to remind you that your job is NOT to write their assignments for them, of course. I certainly will tell my students that… and the fact that you are volunteers that don’t have to help them… so be nice. If any students misbehave (tho I don’t expect it) don’t hesistate to contact me and I will take care of it. The goal of this project is to integrate successfully into the Wikipedia community. Anyway… what I really need your help with is helping students get oriented to Wikipedia, make appropriate changes and write about appropriate topics (see Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus for assignments). I also need your technical expertise… I am only an English teacher after all! I appreciate what technology does for us but I am no technical expert!
Again, thank you for volunteering and you will hear from us again soon! Thelmadatter 19:02, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter
