Finance is the umbrella term used to describe a variety of areas related to money. Finance is a term that can be used in unison with banking, debt, capital markets, money and investing (Kurt). Regular individuals, business and organizations use finance daily to project future costs, make payroll, and invest their money. Essentially, finance is broken down into three main categories: personal finance, corporate finance and government finance (Kurt). Within these topics, there a certain terms which are used by many such as interest rates, yields, profit, and risk (“What is Finance?”). Some careers associated with finance include commercial banking, financial planning, wealth management and investment banking.
The most respected career title associated with finance is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). A chartered financial analyst means that you are certified competent and have integrity related to your work in finance (Hayes). There are three levels of difficult tests that one needs to pass in order to receive the certification. Also, to even sit for the exam you must have a bachelor’s degree, four years of work experience, or be in the last year of your bachelor’s degree (Hayes). The average salary for someone with a CFA certification is around $85,000 to $100,000 a year depending on if you work for a private firm or for a foundation/trust (Rodgers). A typical financial analyst is typically looking at the markets, using Microsoft excel, or sitting in on meetings having to do with the financial future of the firm they are a part of (Wayman).
