These coral have an internal cavity that is typically occupied by a symbiotic sipunculan worm; in the crab's habitat in the Ōshima Straight south of Amami Ōshima, it is often found inside the corals instead.[1][2] Diogenes heteropsammicola is a species of hermit crab that lives within "walking corals" of the genera Heterocyathus and Heteropsammia. A particular kind of hermit crab known as Diogenes heteropsammicola has evolved a symbiotic association with "walking corals" belonging to the genera Heterocyathus and Heteropsammia. This kind of hermit crab lives inside the internal cavities of these corals, as opposed to other hermit crabs that live in empty snail shells. Spunculan worms, which typically reside in these cavities, have a symbiotic relationship with the corals themselves. Diogenes heteropsammicola does, however, inhabit specific environments, such as the Ōshima Strait south of Amami Ōshima.
