A potential problem when a 6 pin to 4 pin IEEE 1394 cable is being used to connect two pieces of equipment is that the 6 pin connector can be plugged into its socket the wrong way round. A DC voltage of up to 30v can then be transmitted to the 4 pin IEEE 1394 connector which destroys the IEEE 1394 circuitry at the 4 pin end. This has resulted in damage to many IEEE 1394 video cameras [1]
