THesis THe effects of music notation software on compositional practices and outcomes PhD 2007
"The author freely admits that the emergence of music notation software into common usage being coincident with his personal emergence as a composer has been an important factor in his becoming a composer. The ability to hear works as they unfolded was the single greatest factor in this." He outlines some of the challenges for teachers of composition who must teach students to be aware of software's advantages and pitfalls.[1]
In Set THeory Watson examines the social groupings and formation of groups of composers at Victoria University and the New Zealand School of Music.[2]
In 2008 Watson made a 42 minute documentary film at the Composers Association workshop, The CANZ Nelson Composers Workshop: Inside the Incubator, which was screened for the first time on the opening night of the 2009 Workshop. Watson had become aware that there was little film of New Zealand composers works where the music did not involve performance art, film, dance or some other visual element.[3]
