Wanted Women is a book by Deborah Scroggins profiling two contrasting muslim women, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Aafia Siddiqui. She described being in Amsterdam, on her way for an assignment for Vogue magazine to search for Aafi, and being shocked when she read about the brutal murder of Theo van Gogh a film-maker associated with Ayaan. Aafia was characterized as a follower of a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, while Ayaan had reached out to and adapted to an interpretation of Islam that cooperated with non-muslim neighbors.
Megan O'Grady, reviewing the book for Vogue magazine, called it a "welcome respite from the “clash of civilizations” rhetoric in post-9/11 international affairs."[1] Rachel Newcomb, reviewing the book for The Washington Post, called it a "thorough biographical treatment to two women who remain enigmas, despite their status as public figures."[2] Jina Moore, writing in the Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote[3]:
- Though their stories never intersect, they are united by each woman’s rejection of moderate Islam for a fundamentalist interpretation: Siddiqui to enforce it; Ali to rail against it.[3]
