Georgina Stanley Reid was born in Hull, United Kingdom, and emigrated with her parents, settling in Port Hope, Upper Canada.[1] She earned a 2nd class teaching certificate in 1860. She married Richard Henry Riches, in 1865. They moved to Toronto in 1871, where they operated a rooming house, and Riches left her in 1872. In 1875 Reid returned to teaching. Kiefer cited several indications that she was recognized as a particularly gifted teacher.

In 1982 she was appointed the principal of the Palace Street School, an appointment that stirred controversy. Reid was the principal of that school until its closure in 1887, and was subsequently the principal of other schools until her death in 1915.[1]

On 6 Sept. 1882 Riches was appointed principal of Palace Street School, at the corner of Front and Cherry streets. The appointment immediately generated controversy. A number of female teachers with higher certificates protested "ill-judged favoritism." In addition, two petitions were presented, one froth the ratepayers of St Lawrence Ward and the other from the parents of children attending the school, against a female head.{{cite news}}: CS1 maint: url-status (link)
