Construction and design
[edit]In the late 1930s, the United States government, owner of the Panama Railroad Company and its subsidiary, the Panama Railroad Steamship Company, decided to replace the latter's two remaining steamships with three new steel-hulled passenger-cargo ships, which would be designed to carry not only cargo and personnel of the railroad company, but also private passengers and general cargo. The three new vessels, named Panama, Ancon and Cristobal, were designed by noted naval architect George G. Sharp, with interiors designed by Raymond Loewy. All three ships were virtually identical in design, the main difference being the interior color schemes of their passenger accommodations. They were the first ships built to comply with the Bureau of Navigation's stringent new safety standards, which included extensive fireproofing by the use of asbestos, and improved watertight subdivision of the hulls. The ships' decks had neither camber nor sheer, simplifying construction,[1] and allowing for ready conversion to troopships in case of war.
Cristobal was built in 1938-1939 at the Quincy, Massachusetts yard of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation. The last of the three ships to be completed, Cristobal was launched on 4 March 1939 and delivered in August of the same year.
Cristobal had an overall length of 493 feet 6 inches (150.42 m)—474 feet 8 inches (144.68 m) between perpendiculars—a beam of 64 feet (20 m), hold depth of 31 feet 6 inches (9.60 m) and draft of 26 feet 3 inches (8.00 m). Her register tonnages were 10,021 gross and 5,925 net. She was powered by a pair of double-reduction geared compound steam turbine engines with an aggregate shaft horsepower of 9,000, driving twin screw propellers; steam was supplied by two three-drum watertube boilers with a working pressure of 445 psi (3,070 kPa). The ship had a cruising speed of about 17 knots (20 mph; 31 km/h).
Cristobal's relatively modest passenger capacity of about 200 allowed her designers to be generous in the size of her passenger accommodations. Not only the cabins, but also the public spaces, such as the decks and promenades, were unusually spacious for a ship of her class.
