The Mayor of the City of Gainesville is the official head of the city of Gainesville in the U.S. state of Florida. The mayor of Gainesville is elected by universal suffrage by the citizens of Gainesville to a three-year term and limited to serving no more than two terms.[2]
Duties and powers
[edit]Gainesville has a council–manager form of government which means day-to-day operations of the city are run by the city manager. The mayor is the official head of the city for ceremonially purposes, receipt of service of legal processes and the purposes of military law. The mayor is technically a member of the city council and is required to preside at all meetings. The mayor is also allowed to vote on all matters that come before the city council, but has no veto powers.[3]
As of July 1 2015, the salary for the mayor is set at $41,781.77[4].

[edit]The mayor is elected in a citywide election. Elections occur every three years during the spring. Elections are non-partisan and by majority, but if no candidate receives a majority a run-off election is called between the top two candidates who received the most votes.[5]
Succession
[edit]Per city code of ordinances, the mayor-commissioner pro tempore shall perform the functions and duties of the office of mayor in the absence of the mayor. If the mayor's seat is vacated , and less than 6 months remain in the unexpired term or until the next regular election the commission shall appoint a successor to serve until a new mayor is elected. If there is more than 6 months remaining in the term or until the next general election, the seat shall be filled by a special election not more than 60 days after the occurrence the vacancy.[6]
The mayor is subject to recall as provided by Florida law.[7]
