Richard Koci Hernandez is a national Emmy award winning video and multimedia producer.

Biography & Career

Hernandez worked as a photojournalist for the San Jose Mercury News for 15 years. He was named deputy director of photography and multimedia after he helped create MercuryNewsPhoto.com. He has had work appear in Time, Wired, The New York Times, a National Geographic book and several international magazines. In the past he has taught multimedia workshops at Stanford University, USC Annenburg school for Communication, National Press Photographers Association, The Southern Short Course, National Association for Hispanic Journalists and National Association for Black Journalists. He has also conducted Master Class TEDTalk in 2012. He has been a guest instructor at San Francisco State University. Hernandez became a visiting Fellow at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism in 2008. He accepted an Assistant Professor position for new media at the UC Graduate School of Journalism in 2011.

Hernandez graduated in journalism from San Francisco State University.

Awards

Hernandez was awarded an Emmy award in the New Approaches to Documentary for his work of a video called "Uprooted". He was nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize for his work during his time at the Mercury News. In 2003 he was awarded the James K. Batten Knight Ridder Excellence Award.
