FTL comm
[edit]- Superluminal communication
- ansible
- An Inquiry into the Possibility of Nonlocal Quantum Communication submitted by Cramer and Herbert to Foundations of Physics 17 Sept 2014. Only in arxiv right now, wait until/if it gets published. Seems to show that nonlocal signalling is impossible with the Dopfer experiment, contrary to Cramer's suggestion in "Frontiers of Propulsion Science"
- "Examination of the ghost-interference and Dopfer experiments raises a very interesting question: Can the coincidence requirement be removed? The answer is subtle. In principle, the two entangled photons are connected by nonlocality whether they are detected in coincidence or not. The coincidence may perhaps be removable. However, in both experiments the authors reported that no two-slit interference distribution was observed when the coincidence requirement was removed.
- These considerations lead to a new quantum mechanical paradox: it appears possible that nonlocal observer-to-observer signals can be transmitted by controlling the presence or absence of an interference pattern by forcing wave-like or particle-like behavior on an entangled photon pair."
- Conclusion: "We have investigated the possibility of nonlocal quantum signaling by analyzing several path-entangled systems. The conjecture that nonlocal signaling might be possible by adjusting the entanglement to 71% to permit coherence has proved to be incorrect. Instead, we find that in all cases investigated the intrinsic complementarity between two-photon interference and one-photon interference blocks any potential nonlocal signal. Our conclusion is that no nonlocal signal can be transmitted from Alice to Bob by varying Alice’s configuration in any of the ways discussed here. Nature appears to be well protected from the possibility of nonlocal signaling."
From Kaiser - history of attempts to use quantum entanglement to achieve FTL comm
- May 1978 - Sarfatti prepares a patent disclosure on a FTL quantum communication system
- dual double slit experiment with variable slit detector on A
- similar to the delayed choice experiments
- Eberhard's counter-proof indicated that the superluminal connections inherent in individual events would always be masked or hidden from view when considering averages over many such events.
- Appears very similar to the Dopfer experiment, with the slit detector corresponding to position of lens and detector at A
- See Cramer & Herbert analysis above
- spring 1979 - Herbert QUICK
- Entangled polarization states
- Receiver able to tell if transmitter was measuring linear or circular polarization by using half-wave plate
- similar to scheme proposed by Franco Selleri
- GianCarlo Ghirardi analysis
- half-wave plate effect reported by Beth used very large number of photons
- to get same effect and single photon level would require infinitely massive plate but then it wouldn't rotate
- january 1981 - Herbert FLASH
- relied on ability to clone an arbitrary quantum state, which is forbidden due to linearity of quantum theory
- led to no-cloning theorem developed separately by Ghirardi; Zurek and Wooters; Dieks
- also limited by spontaneous emission at single photon level
- 2007 built FLASH device and showed it wouldn't work
- while the above efforts did not lead to FTL comm, it did lead to quantum encryption
Lorentz force history
[edit]From Darrigol
- 1881 - J.J. Thomson tries to determine the electromagnetic behavior of charged particles in cathode rays. Uncritical uses Maxwell's expression for displacement current, sneaks around the contradiction, gets right form but wrong coefficient (1/2) in front.
- 1889 - Heaviside gets the correct expression. Started at his complete duplex equations for all cases of motion, which only give fields, and used the principle of activity (what's this?). Method is ambiguous but Hertz provides a solution (??).
- 1893 - J.J. Thomson gives force as 1/3(v x B) derived from the kinetic energy of motion of "tubes of electric force". Schuster corrects him in print in 1897. Tubes of force provided broad, unified intuition but lacked complete mathematical expression - thus the erroneous quantitative deductions.
- 1892 - Lorentz in second memoir developed "the theory of a system of charge particles which move across the ether without dragging this medium". Attempt to reduce all EM phenomena to interactions of charged particles via the stationary ether. Very un-Maxwellian model - applied EM concepts at the molecular scale. Derived correct force law at microscopic level by Lagrange's method, taking T=(1/2)\int(b^2)dt, U=(1/2)\int(d^2)dt for the kinetic and potential energies of the ether, where b and d are the microscopic fields.

- Heber C. Kimball on Marsh's apostasy, 1857
- Implies Marsh's wife played a role in his apostasy but doesn't give details
- letter that Marsh wrote to Heber C. Kimball as a prerequisite to being rebaptized. need link (to confirm text) and date
- From that letter: "I have met with G[eorge] W. Harris and a reconsiliation has taken place with us, and when that was accomplished I was so overjoyed that I was constrained to say in my heart truely this is an evidence the Lord Loves me after all my rebellion & my sins." Harris is the only person mentioned by name in the letter.
- Why would he need reconciliation with George Harris?
- G.A. Smith telling the story as recorded by William Clayton in Heber C. Kimball’s diary on Dec. 21, 1845: need link to confirm
- "Sometimes mere trifles, destroy the confidence which each ought to have in the other, this prevents a union of faith & feeling[.] The apostacy of Thomas B. Marsh was caused by so small a thing as a pint of strippings and his oaths brought the exterminating order which drove us all out of Missouri[.]"
- The Journal of Henry William Bigler, need some way to confirm text and date (but 1846 at latest)
- "While in Far West I was at the trial of Sister Marsh the wife of Thomas B. Marsh, he was the President of the Twelve, for skimming milk[.] Several sisters in Far West had agreed to unite in make[-]ing cheese by putting their milk together, each one promising not to skim their milk. The trial was before Bishop Edward Partridge where it was [?] that she had not kept her promise and was about to withdraw the hand of fellowship[.] [T]he Bishop and others plead with her to make things right and offered to give her time to do so, but no [?] she called on God and angels to witness her innocence[.] [A]t this the Prophet jumped up and said “Sister Marsh if you say that you lie like the devil.” This remark from the Prophet at that time made me [stare? startled?], However on a little reflection, I [sure?] got over it."

- Diary of Brigham Young, 1980
- See footnote 75: "According to Marsh's own account (Thomas B. Marsh Papers, 1838-1863, L.D.S. Archives), the incident that caused his defection was a quarrel between Mrs. Marsh and Mrs. George W. Harris over pooling milk and making cheese from the joint enterprise. Mrs. Marsh was accused of skimming off the cream before the milk was delivered for the cheese. The husbands, Thomas B. and George W., became involved in the dispute. The case went to the High Council where Joseph Smith decided against Marsh and his wife. Marsh claimed Joseph was wrong in becoming involved, it should have been a Council decision."
- If this is an accurate summary of Marsh's own account, this is pretty definitive.
