Biography:
Emma Newby was born in Draycot Cerne, Wiltshire, the third daughter of the Rev. Henry Barry, the rector of Draycot Cerne. Her father was formerly a fellow of Queen's College, Oxford.He was also also a historian. In 1831 he published: Caesar and the Britons.He died in 1850.
In 1847 Emma met Charles John Newby of Ryde (1818-1866), Isle of Wight; a solicitor. They married in 1848 and lived from then on in London. Charles John Newby served as Master Extraordinary in the High Court of Chancery. In 1854, Mrs C.J Newby published her first novel: Mabel, using the nom de plume "Emma Warburton." After her husband’s death of consumption Mrs Newby did not remarry. She continued to publish and she died in Southsea, Hampshire, in 1899.
