Social Media

Social Media are websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking [1]. It is readily available at our fingertips. However, as entertaining it is, there are downsides to it as well. According to the centreformentalhealth.org.uk, if instant gratification (likes on their post/photo) is not felt by the user after they post, they may contribute it to being unpopular and form a negative self-reflection of themselves [2]. Social media has been linked to depression, anxiety, lower-self esteem, etc. especially in teens and adolescents [3]. To decrease the likelihood of experiencing depression induced by social media, fastcompany.com suggests limiting time on social media, having detox periods, and to acknowledge your emotions during/after usage [4]. The main component of unhappiness related to social media is comparison.
